Chandigarh, September 29, 2023 – Members of the newly formed Waveguard Swimming Club, including Gurcharanjeet Singh, Jasjit Singh, William JG and Ashok Sharma, were invited by Sports Secretary Shri Sarvjit Singh. Enhancing practice facilities: Recognizing limited practice opportunities for swimmers due to frequent closures of pools due to filtration plant in Pathankot, the government has quickly allocated a budget of Rs 15 lakh. Local DC’s have been given instructions to expedite installation of required filtration systems.
Medical help for swimmers: Acknowledging the financial burden on parents for sports-related injuries due to lack of medical facilities, Sri Sarvjit Singh announced the establishment of medical and mental health centres. The centre will be established at district level with central hub in Mohali, staffed by a team of 12 doctors including physiotherapists, psychologists and dieticians. Hoping to be implemented in the next few months.
Streamlined Tournament Timetable: To address a tournament schedule issue affecting training and performance, the government will cooperate with sporting associations to create an annual timetable. This schedule will be biding on associations, to ensure tournaments are held on the scheduled deadlines. This policy is set to be implemented in the coming days.
Different tournaments: Responding to concerns about junior and senior swimmers competing together, Mr Sarvjit Singh assured that all tournaments will be conducted separately. Formal notification regarding this will be issued soon. In addition, a transparent election process will be imperative for sports associations, including annual elections to be held.
PLAYER INSURANCE: Protecting the wellbeing and prospects of players, the players insurance provision will soon be implemented.
Coaching reform: To reduce the workload due to a shortage of coaches, the government has developed a comprehensive sports policy. The policy includes establishment of 1000 sports centers in Punjab and recruitment of 2300 new coaches.
